California's New Laws Increase Safety Measures for Children

We wanted to bring to your attention two very important laws California recently passed which promote safety and security for children and families.  The first is that most homes must have carbon monoxide monitors, and the second is that the booster seat age was increased to eight years old.

• On July 1, 2011, California passed a law requiring:

“all single family dwellings, duplexes, condos, townhomes and apartments in small complexes with attached garages or gas burning heaters, appliances or fireplaces, install carbon monoxide monitors on each level of the home.”

Installing carbon monoxide monitors is a very inexpensive safety measure (monitors can be purchased for under $20) that ultimately saves lives.  In compliance with this law, we will begin checking all of our homes for carbon monoxide monitors during our monthly home inspections starting March 2012.  Please install at least one monitor on each floor of your home by 2/29/12.

• On January 1, 2012, California also changed the booster seat age to eight years old.  The car seat/booster seat law is as follows:

“Children *MUST* be secured in an appropriate child passenger restraint (safety seat or booster seat) IN THE BACK SEAT OF A VEHICLE until they are at least 8 YEARS OLD or 4' 9" in height.”

Please make sure you have an appropriate car seat/booster seat for all children in your home under the age of 8 or under 4’9”.
