Walden announces the winners of its Walden Scholars program
This year, thanks to a generous donation from Harley Sefton, Walden is able to help 14 scholars in their pursuit of a college education. A total of 6 scholars in San Diego, 4 scholars in Riverside and 4 scholars in Los Angeles Counties were named as recipients. The scholars are: Lacey C., Reena P., Candice K., Theresa S., Amanda G., Melinda A., Josefina L., Emma M., William M., Marissa T., Jamisha W., Daniel M., Rachel R., and Brittany W.
The Walden Scholars program was designed to assist former foster youth pursue post-high school education. Walden scholarship funds are intended to fill the critical gap between financial aid and the actual cost of achieving an education. Program requirements include:
1. Recipient must be a member of Walden's Independent Futures program;
2. Recipient must be registered and attending an accredited higher education institution (community college, vocational education program or university);
3. Recipient must maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA;
4. Recipient must be able to show that he/she has attempted to receive all typical funding opportunities available (financial aid, Pell grants, other scholarships for which you would qualify);
5. Recipient must commit to having monthly two electronic (phone, email, facebook, etc) contacts with Walden's Teen Service Coordinator and one in person.
Walden Scholars applications are accepted annually, and may be granted for any post-high school educational opportunity, including: vocational education, trade school, junior college, four year university, and graduate school. Funds may be used for a variety of needs including: tuition, books, laptops, housing supplement, and transportation needs. Although there is not a set maximum for scholarship awards, most scholarships range between $500 and $5,000. Walden scholarship funding is made possible through the generosity of private donations.
